Snapper - Another Early-Days Fish from the Archive to Kick This Party Off!
To many, this may just look like a fish, and it is - if that's all you want it to be. But walk with me for a moment...
It took a while for this fish to grow on me. I thought it didn't quite resemble the reference image enough, and it seemed to be in a different style from my other fish. There have been a few moments now when I've reached a point with my artwork where I stop liking a piece. Sometimes that's where it stays, maybe it gets pushed to the side, put in a pile, shoved in a drawer, and in extreme cases, torn to pieces.
In rarer moments, I suspect when my brain chemistry is just right, I vice-grip a pencil like a two-year-old and plow through layers of meticulous pastel color work. These are the same pencils I had, just moments ago, flipped out about dropping accidentally because I had just sharpened their tips. More often than not, I walk away with a fish I hate less.
As it turns out, the very fish I had been having a love-hate relationship with was one of the favourites among visitors to my home (and subsequent fish-wall viewing). And so, it survived knee-jerk artwork destruction and continues to live on. I like to think it reminds me to stop focusing so much on the result and enjoy the process a bit more, but it is also just a fish.
